Here is a little information about Coronavirus and the bankruptcy courts.
Many friends, colleagues and clients of mine want to know if the bankruptcy courts are closed down in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic. The answer is a resounding no.
As the chief bankruptcy judge in our district put it, “Now people need the bankruptcy courts more than ever.” Bankruptcy is definitely one of the essential services we cannot do without. We file our cases electronically, the same as the last 15 years, so we bankruptcy lawyers can file cases and motions at 3 in the morning, or literally 2 hours after our clients hire us to file a bankruptcy, if needed to file that quickly.
Our hearings are conducted remotely by telephone, with the Judge in his or her chambers and orders are processed quickly. The bankruptcy help desk is available by telephone for those who are filing without lawyers and who have questions.
So rest assured, the bankruptcy system is here to help you if you need it, now more than ever.
